George Wolmarans

About George

George is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

I am passionate about nature, the wonder of creation and the joy of discovery it brings.
I studied Architecture at the University of Pretoria. I believe that the principles of design and composition that I learned at this time without the influence of a school of painting, laid the groundwork for a very open approach to painting. During this time I also had the opportunity to develop my photographic skills, further honed during a year spent as photographer for ‘PARATUS’ magazine while completing my National Service.
I worked in architecture for about 10 years, always with a yearning to do sculpture full time.
However, I started out painting, exploring colour!
I find that this exploration of colour is a continuos thread in my work. The other element that has found a place in my work is sculpture. I use cast panels, mounted above the canvas, or even relief work onto the canvas. I find the combination of paint and sculpture a fascinating exploration of space.
Another stint full-time architecture work led to the medium I am currantly exploring, Digital Photography and image manipulation.

In July 1996 I exhibited my first paintings. I had entered 3 paintings in the Empangeni region of the Kwazulu-Natal Bienale Exhibition. The Empangeni Cultural museum hosted the exhibition. The next was a painting, 'Grunter', that I had entered for the Natal Society of Art 'Food Glorious Food' exhibition. It was on exhibition in their old Overport Gallery, Durban.

I held my first solo exhibition on the 31st of August 1996, at 10 Lala Crescent, Mtunzini, in Kwazulu-Natal. The exhibition was opened by Albert van Jaarsveldt, a Mtunzini historian. I exhibited 25 painting. A mix of Acrylic, Oil and Pastels.

My next exhibition was a shared exhibition with Jane L. Wiles, at 10 Lala Crescent, Mtunzini, on the 1st of March 1997. I exhibited twenty paintings.

My fourth exhibition, "hands on" was opened by Mr Servaas Venter on the 31st of March 2000. at plot 617, Kameeldrift, Pretoria. I exhibited 39 works. I also exhibited four digitaly created numbered inkjet prints.

My 5th solo exhibition “building elamental” was opened by Sidney Miller, Archeologist and Architectural Conservationist. Exhibition opened 9 November 2007 at the offices of Andre Du Preez Architects, Pretoria. It consisted of 25 Limited Edition digital prints on paper.
