About "Magnolia 4"

There is a lovely magnolia tree in the gardens of the farm where I live outside Hermanus. These flowers are for me very beautiful, they are shortlived in blooming which also relates to human life. I have painted them many times, large & small and will probably continue to do many more. Enjoy them in their natural state as once picked they turn brown quickly, hence speed in working is necessary when painting. This one was done while still on the tree.

About Alyson

Alyson Guy

Alyson is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

I appreciate all facets of life, beauty of creation in all its diversity- so paint people (expressive faces & those that tell a story)flowers, landscapes, cats are a particular love also. Enjoy colour & texture, so oils is preferred medium though have worked in acrylic & watercolour, as well as sculpture in clay. Have been commisioned to do murals, landscapes again with the feeling of travelling into the picture. Often have a spiritual message in the subject matter and have written short notes as I have meditated on the artwork afterwards. Being creative is very therapeutic for me and I know others that it has helped to be set 'free', so believe in the means of expressing one's inner self.

Exhibitions

December 2000 -1st Solo, then each year thereafter joint exhibitions at Hermanus Art Society, Vermont Art Circle and with Group of 12 Women artists (Book Club) The latter ones generally with a theme & in 2008 exhibited "Miniatures". Also in recent years has taken part in exhibitions held at Liebrecht Gallery, Somerset West & Marsh Rose Mall, Grabouw, 4ArtSake Gallery, Hermanus & La Vierge Winery & Restaurant. Latest commissions by Dept of Tourism, Western Cape.October 2010 exhibition as part of the Vermont Art Circle at Hornbill Gallery, Hemel-en-Aarde Village, Hermanus. My 2nd solo exhibition was held at Bellini Gallery, Main Road, Hermanus 10 years after my first. from 3 to 12 December 2010. The theme I chose, "People & Places" expressed my main emphasis & I was able to paint portraits of the people with whom I work daily plus friends in the community on Volmoed where I live & work. I was able to bless the staff by giving them their portraits as a Christmas gift - the joy & laughter that brought was very special. The official opening on 3 December was well attended & great fun with several sales also. We were all pleased with the outcome but not sure that I feel like painting right now!!!!!
I have recently joined the South African Society or Artists as a country member and participated in 3 exhibitions this year at Kirstenbosch, the latter being the Annual Selection based one. Bellini Gallery, Hermanus curently have small paintings of local people on display. My 3rd Solo is on at The Missions House Gallery, de Villiers Street, Onrus, called 'TREES'. A series of trees painted from various place I visited over the past 18 months, with some experiments in technique & other media. Found inspiration from photos taken by my 2 daughters and other friends and of course on the farm in the beautiful valley where we live.
