About "The Last Place He Stands"
Cape Buffalo Painting - The Last Place He Stands honours the extraordinary resilience of one of Africa's most formidable animals. Standing alone beneath the fading light, the old bull carries the quiet authority of a life shaped by endurance rather than conquest. Every scar, every weathered feature and every steady gaze speaks of seasons survived, battles fought and wisdom earned.
This painting was inspired by my fascination with old Cape Buffalo bulls. To reach old age in the African wilderness is an extraordinary achievement in itself. Through years of drought, torrential rain, scarce grazing, disease and countless encounters with predators, only the strongest, wisest and most resilient survive. Age is not a weakness. It is proof of a lifetime spent overcoming challenges that many never endure.
Yet nature follows its own rhythm. In the distance, young lions begin to gather. They are not the subject of this painting, nor are they portrayed as villains. They represent the next generation, waiting patiently for the inevitable moment when youth succeeds experience. The old bull understands what lies ahead. He stands not in fear, but with the quiet dignity that comes from knowing he has already lived a remarkable life.
The painting became more than a portrait of a buffalo. It became a reflection on life itself. There comes a season when every person, no matter how accomplished, eventually steps aside for those who follow. Whether in business, leadership, sport or the natural world, each generation inherits the place once held by another. That transition is not a sign of failure, but part of the enduring cycle through which knowledge, opportunity and responsibility continue.
Painted entirely in professional artist-grade oils, the artwork combines expressive brushwork with rich earth tones, deep shadows and warm sunset light to create an atmosphere of quiet reflection. The solitary bull dominates the foreground with immense presence, while the distant lions remain deliberately subdued, allowing the emotional focus to remain on the dignity of the buffalo rather than the threat beyond.

About Ida
Ida Lombard is a South African contemporary artist whose work explores light, nature, movement and the emotions hidden within a moment. Her distinctive Abstract Realism combines expressive oil painting, acrylics and mixed media to move beyond literal representation and reveal the atmosphere and feeling within her subjects.
Her connection with art began in childhood, influenced by time spent exploring the natural world and early exposure to the discipline of painting. After formal art studies and more than four decades of continued independent practice, Ida has developed a highly expressive visual language characterised by textured surfaces, energetic brushwork, palette-knife marks, expressive drips and layered colour.
Wildlife, landscapes, seascapes, botanical subjects and portraits recur throughout her work, with themes of light, stillness, vulnerability, endurance, hope and transformation. Rather than simply reproducing what she sees, Ida seeks to capture the spirit of a subject--the quiet tension beneath stillness, the movement within a landscape, or the emotional presence of an animal.
Today, Ida works full-time from her Johannesburg studio, creating original paintings for private collectors in South Africa and internationally. Her work is influenced by the expressive energy of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Vladimir Volegov, as well as the storytelling power found in South African wildlife art.
