About "The Wild"

A painting inspired by many thoughts and visions over years of being in the presence of The Wild. The coming together of a pictures sights, smells and sounds. There is almost a sense of relief after the first rain, almost like the bushveld is at last breathing again. The aftermath of the first rains on Africas hot dry rugged landscapes and the almost uncharacteristic tints of the skies. The awesome, almost spiritual presence of Baobabs, some thousands of years old. The sight of old Dagga boys under the palm trees, and the incredibly humble feeling that we feel in the presence of an angry Bull elephant.
Without exception we are all affected by The Wild, it is not only where we come from, but its where we belong.

About Astley

Africa is not a subject I discovered -- it is the landscape I grew up

listening to.

My work centres on baobabs and other enduring trees of the
Zimbabwean wilderness. These forms stand at a scale beyond the
human. Marked by seasons, drought, fire and the passage of

elephants, they carry visible records of time.

I am drawn to their presence -- not as symbols, but as living
structures that have witnessed generations before us and will
likely remain long after. In their stillness there is a sense of

continuity that shifts one's perspective.

Painting allows me to slow that encounter. It invites silence. My
intention is to create work that encourages a deeper breath -- a
moment in which the viewer feels both small and quietly
connected to something older and enduring.

Each piece is grounded in lived experience of the Zimbabwean
bush, where endurance is not metaphor but reality.
