About "Two Parrots"
I painted this image from a photograph that I took at the Tygerberg Zoo, near Cape Town SA. The photo was taken at the precise moment when the one ruffled its feathers, creating a beautiful contrast against the smooth featherly surface of the neighbouring bird. I used acrylic paste and oxides to create a tactile texture onto the board before I painted it with oils.
On my way to work [I'm Visual Arts teacher at SACS, Newlands HS, Cape Town] in the winter mornings synthetic lights reflect bright red, amber, green and a multitude of cold and warm contrasting reflections. I, or my shotgun pilot teenage son, take random photographs through the windshield. As can be expected, only about 1 in a 100 can be edited and prove suitable as an oil painting. I work with a limited predetermined palette before I start a series of 24 works. There is specific personal symbolism to this: My birth date making me a Scorpio - 8th Zodiac -water sign. Coincidentally (and in this instance fittingly) element 24 is Chromium (Cr), a metallic element that can take on a high polish.
