About "Where the Dust Settles "
There a few things in life as humbling as Large bull elephant, especially when they have perhaps taken offense at your presence. An image of any 'Tusker' looking down his nose at you is something that doesn't leave, a crucially sobering moment in life!
Out here in these wild places, there is an energy that very quickly penetrates you, one of humility and fascination, an understanding that perhaps we are actually mortal! There have been many times I have been in these areas, trying to savour the incredible emotion of freedom, and the feeling the sense of reality, of the 'now' and being completely present in it! This painting has been something I have been planning from different parts of my life, I am fascinated by elephants and their intelligence, wisdom and incredible family structures. As I say the prospect of an irritated or perhaps startled elephant at close quarters will most certainly bring you to the present!
Too many times I have been fortunate enough to witness these animals as they draw themselves up to full height and stare down at you, the immediate thought is that they are trying to make a decision, whether to run at you or away, mock charges, dust and noise are sobering, trust me and it's in those moments that time really stands still.
'Tusker', the name often given to Bull elephant with large tusks, a magnificent sight indeed, and perhaps one that most people won't see in the wild anymore, however being in the close presence of any elephant is just an "epic" and an amazingly powerful life experience..
This picture has five bulls reacting to something, the dust and the movement impresses the urgency pf the situation but concentrate the attention of anything present. The egrets take off in various directions, and the carmines flip upward and away from the disturbance! Soon minutes later a calmness will permeate over this waterhole and it will seem empty and quiet, this is Africa and this is "where the dust settles"

About Astley
Africa is not a subject I discovered -- it is the landscape I grew up
listening to.
My work centres on baobabs and other enduring trees of the Zimbabwean wilderness. These forms stand at a scale beyond the human. Marked by seasons, drought, fire and the passage of
elephants, they carry visible records of time.
I am drawn to their presence -- not as symbols, but as living structures that have witnessed generations before us and will likely remain long after. In their stillness there is a sense of
continuity that shifts one's perspective.
Painting allows me to slow that encounter. It invites silence. My intention is to create work that encourages a deeper breath -- a moment in which the viewer feels both small and quietly connected to something older and enduring.
Each piece is grounded in lived experience of the Zimbabwean bush, where endurance is not metaphor but reality.
