About "Whispers in the Shadow"

The bushveld has no edges, only shifting shadows. Every spot on its body is like a spark of coal still glowing from an old wildfire. Its fur bears the grey of winter, the colour of the rocky ridges before the first light breaks. There is no hurry in its walk; the bush walks with it. Its eyes are two cold windows that stare straight through the viewer, glued to a horizon that only it can see. It raises its heavy paw, ready to step over the white border of the canvas, straight into reality. It is the spirit of the bush. Raw, untamed, and carved from nothing more than ash and light.
Petra Lombard reminds us with this charcoal sketch that nature does not have to be beautifully polished to take your breath away. There is a wonderful, raw energy in this work that immediately grabs you. What lifts this work beyond ordinary wildlife art is that gaze. It is not a static picture, the leopard is looking at you.
