About "Wide-Eyed Wonder"

With its oversized eyes, animated expression, and bold yellow backdrop, Wide-Eyed Wonder invites viewers into a moment of unexpected connection with one of nature's most eccentric creatures. Mark's stylized portrayal of the ostrich blends humour and intensity, using textured brushwork and vibrant colour to amplify the bird's personality. The open beak and direct gaze suggest a narrative--perhaps surprise, curiosity, or even confrontation--leaving interpretation open to the viewer's imagination. This piece is a celebration of character in wildlife, transforming a fleeting glance into a lasting impression.

About Mark

Mark Boshoff

I'm inspired by the play of light - how it reveals emotion in landscapes, figures, and fleeting moments. My work blends realism with symbolism, using layered brushwork, glazes, and mark-making to explore themes of solitude, transformation, and connection. I draw from history, mythology, and personal experience to create visual narratives that resonate across time and culture.

Whether painting a storm-lit tree, a mythic embrace, or a dancer caught mid-leap, I aim to evoke feeling and reflection. My art is a declaration of what moves me--and an invitation for others to find meaning in the tension between beauty and vulnerability.

As an artist based in South Africa, I'm inspired by the richness of our landscapes and the complexity of our stories. I approach each canvas with both sensitivity and intent, aiming to create work that resonates across cultures and contexts. My goal is to connect - to offer viewers a moment of reflection, recognition, or emotional clarity.

Art, for me, is not decoration -- it's declaration. It's a way of saying: "This mattered. This moved me. This might move you too."
