About "African Lioness Painting Before the First Light"
African Lioness Painting - Before the First Light portrays the quiet strength of a lioness standing in the final moments before dawn. Hidden within the darkness behind her, unseen but never forgotten, are the cubs she instinctively protects. Beyond the shadows, an unseen presence stirs, yet she remains unwavering. This is a portrait not of aggression, but of courage, vigilance and unconditional devotion.
For me, this painting represents the silent strength found in those who protect others without seeking recognition. Throughout nature, the lioness embodies resilience, wisdom and fierce determination. She carries the responsibility of survival with quiet confidence, relying not only on strength but on instinct, experience and an unbreakable bond with her family.
The warm halo surrounding the lioness was painted to represent far more than light. It symbolises hope, presence and the invisible boundary created by love and courage. The layered brushwork, rich earth tones and expressive paint drips reflect both vulnerability and endurance, creating a balance between realism and abstraction that invites the viewer to pause and reflect.
Rather than capturing a single moment in the African wilderness, Before the First Light explores an emotional truth. It reminds us that true courage is often found in stillness, patience and the willingness to stand firm when those we love depend on us. The painting celebrates the quiet heroes whose greatest strength is their unwavering commitment to protect.

About Ida
Ida Lombard is a South African contemporary artist whose work explores light, nature, movement and the emotions hidden within a moment. Her distinctive Abstract Realism combines expressive oil painting, acrylics and mixed media to move beyond literal representation and reveal the atmosphere and feeling within her subjects.
Her connection with art began in childhood, influenced by time spent exploring the natural world and early exposure to the discipline of painting. After formal art studies and more than four decades of continued independent practice, Ida has developed a highly expressive visual language characterised by textured surfaces, energetic brushwork, palette-knife marks, expressive drips and layered colour.
Wildlife, landscapes, seascapes, botanical subjects and portraits recur throughout her work, with themes of light, stillness, vulnerability, endurance, hope and transformation. Rather than simply reproducing what she sees, Ida seeks to capture the spirit of a subject--the quiet tension beneath stillness, the movement within a landscape, or the emotional presence of an animal.
Today, Ida works full-time from her Johannesburg studio, creating original paintings for private collectors in South Africa and internationally. Her work is influenced by the expressive energy of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Vladimir Volegov, as well as the storytelling power found in South African wildlife art.
Each painting is created as an original work, with professional artist-quality materials and a Certificate of Authenticity.
