Statement:
In Chinese Girl 2.0, I reimagine Vladimir Tretchikoff's iconic "Green Lady" for a new era. Rather than looking away in silent mystery, she now looks back -- with strength, tension, and presence.
My inspiration came from watching global power shifts and reflecting on identity, authority, and cultural fusion. As an Afrikaner artist based in South Africa, I felt a deep need to question: Who controls the narrative, and who watches whom?
At the time of creating this piece, I was driven by a mix of curiosity and unease. China's rise, geopolitical tension, and the shifting moral ground of the West all weighed on me. I wanted to capture that in her gaze -- not as defeat, but as conversation and resistance.
To me, Chinese Girl 2.0 is more than a portrait. It's a mirror of a shifting world. It bridges past and present, memory and power, tradition and change.
When a visitor sees her, I invite them to engage with those questions too: Who is the observer? Who is being observed? What does identity look like in an era of global flux?
This painting is not just a tribute -- it's a dialogue.

Biography:
Pieter Lategan was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on 24 January 1970.
He left school in 1988 and started as a clerk in the Department Education and training.
In 1992 he enrolled at NKP Teacher's Training College in Pretoria. His main subject was art.
The end of the year he stopped studying joined the University of Technology.
He took the Entertainment Technology Course with his main subject, Decor Painting.
He got a job at an advertising company for a year and left and work for a Medal Company and designed for five years and eight months medals.
While there, he enrolled at an Art Academy for a part time course in Communication Design. He completed his studies at the Pretoria University of Technology. He started working for an Internet company as a graphic artist.
He worked there from 2003 till 2015 in the Marketing department as a Graphic, web designer and marketing coordinator.
He enrolled again, part time, at an Art Academy for short courses again in Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and PHP Programming and HTML 5 and SQL also at a private college.
Currently Painting.
In his first series, he was looking at the differences between the Zulus in the Witwatersrand and the Zulus in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
