About "Masai Mom I"
I love showing the people of Africa going about their daily tasks There is also a haunting beauty in Africa. It has been a phenomena and mystery for ages, even to those who were born here and have lived through all its aspects. I do not know why a moment in the life of Africa could haunt me and drive me to my easel. The world without the layers and dreams of Africa would have been very bleak indeed!
My models never know of me! I steal a pose, mostly through the window of a speeding vehicle...... I do not like the self-conscious pose or the harsh realistic rendering of a photo. The attitude, the angle of the head and a few soft features are all I want to work with. Those are my building blocks. Composition and choices of colour develop to form a unity while I work. And I leave it to the spectator to find the story.

Marie moved into a retirement centre in Durban in 2017. Smaller works leaning more to illustration were displayed in Lindy van Niekerk Gallery in Durbanville.
Because of limited working space, Marie now concentrates on commissioned portrait work and palette knife works.
