About "Siblings"

Trees have fascinated me for ever , One of my favorite African trees is the Camel thorn (Acacia Erioloba), They have the most incredible character , growing in the most incredible shapes and patterns .Historically they have been a real part of Africa , the wood being used for many applications by man including wagon wheel bearings! They are one of the highlights of any visit to the areas they inhabit in Hwange , and other wild areas .
This particular tree is behind Ngweshla Camp in Hwange National Park , a place I have spent many hours relishing in the privilege of life ! The pattern of growth of this tree has always reminded me of two very close brothers , who look the same and do the same things -inseparable in life and death ! 'Attached at the hip' as they say

About Astley

Astley Maberly

Africa is not a subject I discovered -- it is the landscape I grew up

listening to.

My work centres on baobabs and other enduring trees of the
Zimbabwean wilderness. These forms stand at a scale beyond the
human. Marked by seasons, drought, fire and the passage of

elephants, they carry visible records of time.

I am drawn to their presence -- not as symbols, but as living
structures that have witnessed generations before us and will
likely remain long after. In their stillness there is a sense of

continuity that shifts one's perspective.

Painting allows me to slow that encounter. It invites silence. My
intention is to create work that encourages a deeper breath -- a
moment in which the viewer feels both small and quietly
connected to something older and enduring.

Each piece is grounded in lived experience of the Zimbabwean
bush, where endurance is not metaphor but reality.
