About "Struggling Trees"
I've always admired plants growing in harsh conditions, in particular trees climbing on rocks high up in mountains. Their magnificent roots create webs, holding them tight against the rocks they cling to, repelling the force of the wind and allowing their branches to reach for the sunlight and warmth.
My artistic inspiration comes from a blend of my Russian heritage, merged with the culture and vibrancy of my adopted home of South Africa. The splendid poetry and fine art of the early 20th century, a time known as an epoch of Russian cultural decadence, took root within my soul, clambering for expression. It was many years before the conditions were right, and I could reflect the vibrant colors, bright lights and fascinating dynamics of South Africa, to my satisfaction. I do not plan my works in advance - I just put paints to canvas, and play. Colors and shapes begin to guide and inspire, and intuitively I draw ideas from the universe, letting the flow of shade and movement come through my being and untangle light from dark. This is the way I am driven to find myself through artistic meditation, to put it to canvas and show people what I see and feel, perhaps even introducing them to an alternative vision.
