About "The Village"

The simplicity of the West Coast, in particular the Fisherman's villages, has always been charming and romantic to me. Through my paintings I try to preserve that nostalgic and picturesque scenes thats fast disappearing through commercialization. Whenever I paint a Fisherman's cottage scene, I feel nostalgic and a bit sad. This specific painting was no different.
I visited Paternoster recently and was touched by the suffering of the local fishermen. Commercialization did not bring them prosperity. The lonely man walking uphill, carrying his catch of the day, not being able to sell it, and has to take it home, again, at least his family will eat tonight.

About Marthie

Marthie Potgieter

I was born 17 May 1967 in Krugersdorp. After school I studied to become a nurse, as I always had a passion for people. After I raised my children, we relocated Melkbosstrand, Western Cape.
I always wanted to paint and I started in 2014 with Louis Pretorius for tutoring, but I am mainly self-taught. I love the West Coast and is inspired by the moods of the sea.
The simplicity of the West Coast, in particular the Fisherman's villages, has always been charming and romantic to me. Through my paintings I try to preserve that nostalgic and picturesque scenes that's fast disappearing through commercialization.
I believe painting is silent poetry.
