About "Africa, Geisha"
After a number of years living temporarily in the UK, I went home last July for a couple of months in an attempt to soak my soul in the African sun and ease the homesickness that plagues me. Having recently become a mother, I was incredibly touched by the graceful, strong and proud young Xhosa mothers I saw while driving past the Motherwell township in Port Elizabeth. They had such presence and seemed so resourceful in comparison to the poor people of other countries I have visited whose apathy and self-pity kept them stuck in their dirty, slovenly hopelessness. In comparison to the joy and good behaviour of small Xhosa children, these children were unloved, neglected and difficultly spiteful. Seeing these women with their 'ingceke' painted faces made me proud to be an African.
