About Theresa Jo

Theresa Jo

Theresa Jo is a South African artist, born in Middelburg and grew up in Pretoria, she graduated from the University of Stellenbosch with a BA Fine Art Degree majoring in jewellery design. During her studies she received an Intergold merit award for design and learned the basics and love for etching under South African artist Lyn Smuts.

Theresa Jo exhibited in a number of solo exhibitions through the South African Association of Arts (SAAA) placing focus on her unique metal jewellery pieces accompanied by drawings and prints. It was one of these solo exhibitions that granted her access to part take in the 1985-86 residency programme at La Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, Jo being the first jeweler from South Africa to receive an invitation to participate in this prestigious international arts programme.

"I was fortunate to grow up with JH Pierneef, Alice Goldin, Henkel and Zakkie Eloff paintings in my parents’ home, this influenced my passion for simplicity, honesty and the uncluttered, for me art should not look as if it is an effort to make, but rather an exuberance of the wanting to produce”.

Theresa Jo se workshop at Bizarre Centre, Rocky Street, Yeoville during the late 80s showcased the artist’s creative variety of specialties such as jewellery design, ceramics, embroidery and her most famous elaborated cutlery range with husband CP Wessels.

In 1996 Theresa Jo was invited as a guest to participate in the South African and German Arts Exchange in Messe Munchen. She was also part of a group exhibition in Johannesburg, Fin de siècle during 1997. 2010 marked the return of Theresa Jo as a printmaker with her participation in the 8th Mondial d`Estampe et de la Gravure Originale Triennale de Chamalieres. During 2011 and 2012 Theresa Jo joined in group exhibitions with dramatized etch, monoprint and monotype, these exhibitions included artists such as Strijdom van der Merwe, Elizabeth Miller Vermeulen and Louis Janse van Vuuren.

Theresa Jo was a 2011 Vuleka finalist with her monoprint entitled Dodo Days and a participant in La Calaca Press International Print Exchange that travelled through Illinois, Florida, Texas and Nicaragua. Jo follows the saying of "Undisciplined imagination with disciplined execution" relevant to her printmaking, that in her view offers two extreme poles of discipline as in the uncontrollable monoprint and the precise etching.

Another prominent theme or subject elaborated on in works by Theresa Jo is her love for the Afrikaans culture which mainly includes her roots, the literature and poetry and most definite the humour.
