About Rina

Rina Badenhorst

Rina Badenhorst considers herself as a colourist no light, no colour. The relationships of colour form the backbone of my work and teaching. Over the decades I have developed from strong expressionism in colour to shades of colour, subtleties that translate light. The very same principles of design for example, form and balance, which equal composition depends on the precarious marriage of relationships. My mission is to strive to where light and colour, content and form, reign supreme. At this stage of my life, I have come to terms with my body. In sickness and health our bodies are our lifelong companions. I am preparing for a retrospective early next year for my 70th birthday. Due to circumstances, all the new work reflects this knowledge.

Badenhorst's awareness of nature through the rapport she has experienced with the rugged coastline near Port Elizabeth provides her with a powerful medium to explore her subject - the woman. Through the distortion of forms, the strong use of colour, and fragmentation of images, the artist transforms rock into figure, vice versa. Dismembered images of the female are either led to destruction or are infused with the vital forces of organic and mineral life. "Terra mater/the rape" is a headless cry for help.

Badenhorst comes to terms with her own body and technique in "Inner landscape of the female" (1998 & 2000). "Our bodies are our life-long companions: in sickness and in health". "Diagnosis" is concerned with sensory images. The scale and rhythm of the body cannot be ignored, neither the burning anguish of hands in this acute self-diagnosis.
