About Tony

Tony Hulsenbeck has been drawing and painting for probably most of his life. His preference is for painting in oils or drawing in coloured inks on paper but he has done many murals, cartoons, book illustrations and botanical art . He is mainly self-trained but studied architecture at Pretoria University.
In both drawings and paintings he shows this in the easy familiarity with which he uses perspective and sometimes deliberately undermines it. There is a sculptural feeling about his figures, which are often monumental in feeling and evocative of a type of landscape of the figure or face.

Pattern, shape and colour are the elements with which Tony constructs his work, pattern being very important and sometimes taking precedence over depth. Shapes are also important to Tony and are repeated in different objects in the work. On the surface many of his paintings are realistic and one responds to the familiarity of the scene while realising that this is just one layer of the meaning of the work. His repetitive patterns speak of ritual and this is reinforced by the activities his people are engaged in.
