With this painting I managed to confidently follow the painting process as taught by master sensei Ryno Swart. Working from the lay in towards stating the darks and afterwards the lights was done with a lighter touch than usual. I think the glass of wine that I had before life draw probably helped with not worrying so much about the details and focusing on the bigger ideas in this painting.
I feel privileged to have had my passion for making art being reawakened in my early thirties. After stumbling along for a decade on my own, I happened to join the Observatory Artists[0x1] Co-operative in Cape Town for life draw every Thursday in 2009. Life draw was the catalyst for my transformation into an artist. The discipline of drawing from the model has been key to fine tuning my artistic eye. My aim is to continually improve my drawing while exploring composition, mood and atmosphere in painting. I am always pushing the abstract beauty of the composition with visible brush strokes while still developing recognizable imagery.
