About "Farm Road"
This painting is very special to me since it was my first time painting at a local fare. In order to concentrate and not feal intimidated with all the people coming and going, I had to focus completely on the scene. In the end, I was so into it that I didn't notice the people who wanted to discuss my painting process, etc!!! They had to wait for my coffee break... I love painting with a painting knife, you have partial control, but mostly the paint and knife do their own thing.
I love the process of making art and I especially love paintings that also shows the stages the painting went through, from sketchy to finely rendered. To me, it shows the hand of the artist and makes the painting so much more than a photo of the subject. I aim to paint representationally, contrasting realism with abstract, vintage with modern, rough with soft. Women and landscapes are a recurring theme because I have a strong connection with both and wish to celebrate their essence in my paintings. I am constantly learning and developing my craft and it is the most fulfilling journey and relationship with moments of utter joy (and despair).
Sanlam prize for best painting on show during 2010 GWK Salon exhibition.
