About "History Painting"

My studio is littered with half-finished images. When I was painting the nguni at the top of the format, I found myself including some of the fragmentary, abstracted bits and pieces of other works. Eventually I decided to put in the portrait since the work was a bit like a record of my processes. I needed a strong red at the bottom so decided to paint myself in my doctoral robes. They don't get out much these days.
