About "In the Light"
Being just a piece of burnt wood it is difficult to imagine that charcoal has the potential to equal oil paint or any other expensive painting tools. I believe the subtlety and expression that one can achieve with charcoal are endless. I aim to explore this medium for the rest of my life.
I feel privileged to have had my passion for making art being reawakened in my early thirties. After stumbling along for a decade on my own, I happened to join the Observatory Artists[0x1] Co-operative in Cape Town for life draw every Thursday in 2009. Life draw was the catalyst for my transformation into an artist. The discipline of drawing from the model has been key to fine tuning my artistic eye. My aim is to continually improve my drawing while exploring composition, mood and atmosphere in painting. I am always pushing the abstract beauty of the composition with visible brush strokes while still developing recognizable imagery.
