We probably painted Des for a full year given the shortage of models during 2010. She afterwards joined the co-op a few times for painting as opposed to modelling and made some beautiful drawings. Although this painting was done in 2010 (earlier in my painting career) I managed to capture a bit of the melancholy that Des bring to her poses.
I feel privileged to have had my passion for making art being reawakened in my early thirties. After stumbling along for a decade on my own, I happened to join the Observatory Artists’ Co-operative in Cape Town for life draw every Thursday in 2009. Life draw was the catalyst for my transformation into an artist. The discipline of drawing from the model has been key to fine tuning my artistic eye. My aim is to continually improve my drawing while exploring composition, mood and atmosphere in painting. I am always pushing the abstract beauty of the composition with visible brush strokes while still developing recognizable imagery.
