About "Namibian Landscape"
Friends went on holiday to Namibia and on their return sent me this photo. I just had to paint the rough beauty of the landscape and the painting knife seemed to be the tool for the job. The painting itself sold long ago and last I heard lives in England now, but it still is one of my favourites.
I love the process of making art and I especially love paintings that also shows the stages the painting went through, from sketchy to finely rendered. To me, it shows the hand of the artist and makes the painting so much more than a photo of the subject. I aim to paint representationally, contrasting realism with abstract, vintage with modern, rough with soft. Women and landscapes are a recurring theme because I have a strong connection with both and wish to celebrate their essence in my paintings. I am constantly learning and developing my craft and it is the most fulfilling journey and relationship with moments of utter joy (and despair).
Sanlam prize for best painting on show during 2010 GWK Salon exhibition.
