About "Relationships"
The artist takes a critical look at relationships and employ form and colour to draw an analogy. Although complementary colours is exact opposites on the colour chart it is aesthetically pleasing and enhance our senses to experience the combination as more colourful compared to only one of the colours on its own. The tension between opposites is clear but also form the basis of a symbiotic relationship. The viewer can see that all relationships are not equal by looking at the position of the complimentary pairs on the canvas: Red and Green being more distant than the Blue and Orange and same being more distant than the Yellow and Violet.
Each unit is complex as indicated by the variety of colours and textures of each unit and attempt to point the viewer to the fact that each individual are a complex composition in itself. Black dividers mark the boundaries of each unit but does not constrain the units at the edges – an indication that relationships in real life do not only interact between a finite amount of units. The black dividers is also used to link the different relationships together in a larger social context.
The bare canvas reminds us that relationships exist in a wider social context which can be unrefined and anti-social at times and might even stand in stark contrast to the individual units.
The painting and block dimensions is close to the ratio of a Golden Rectangle but not exactly. Maybe this is an indication of non-perfect relationships in a non-perfect world.
The remainder of the discovery is up to the viewer.........
Note 1: Complementary colours used in Relationships: • Red and Green, • Yellow and Violet, • Blue and Orange, • (Black and White).
Note 2: A Golden Rectangle is one whose side lengths are in the golden ratio which is approximately 1:1.618. A distinctive feature of the Golden Rectangle is that when a square section is removed the remainder is another Golden Rectangle with the same proportions as the first. Square removal can be repeated infinitely (Source: Wikipedia). The infinite nature of the Golden Rectangle can be compared to the complexity and depth of relationships but also give an indication of the level of joy that can be brought forth by same. The golden ratio has many applications in the world around us such as in the formation of sea shells, the dimensions of the human body, our solar system, musical notes, etc. There is a strong link between the golden ratio and Fibonacci numbers which have even greater application in the world at large. The ratio of this painting is 1:1.5.
