Reference L-25 About "Remnant of Red Location" During early 1800's - Settler times of South Africa, the British Military built barracks for the troops on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth. The buildings consisted of rows of corrugated iron semi-detached buildings painted with red oxide to avoid weathering. When Apartheid raised its ugly head, the Afrikaans dominated National Party segregated Black people into the area naming it Red Location after the red oxide. Over the years the location became a settlement of crowded shacks which disintergrated. This remnant of Red Location is one of only two structures still remaining which the Red Location Museum has been empowered to retain. Unfortunately, the people in the area are so destitute that they have started dismantling it to build more shacks. |
