About Adele

Adele Bantjes

Adele is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

In kindergarten my friends complained to the teacher that I did not want to play with them but rather play with clay! The only thing that has changed is the medium I work in…

I am a self taught/naïve artist. I do a low relief in paper onto canvas, and paint it in acrylics. Sometimes I add sand, tealeaves to the paint for some texture. My art takes a lot of time to make. Some of the large ones take up to a month and the smaller ones one to two weeks! It is hard work but very satisfying. I love to combine the sculptor and painter in me!

What is wonderful about naïve art to me is how the artist shows not only something about their culture, but the similarities in all the cultures of the world. All countries have people who are farmers, singers dancers, get married, have tea parties etc. We just do it differently, and the naïve artist portrays it in their own unique way. Naïve art brings people together with its simplicity, innocence and pure, pure joy… It is feel good art!

In my art I am inspired by many subjects: My family and I lived on my grandfather’s farm called Mook where I had the time of my life! I went to a small farm school called Rosary, where we were allowed to go barefoot in the summer (joy for a child!). And then there was the time Boswell and Wilkie circus came to our very small town and wanted to set up in my grandfather’s alfalfa fields! To my dismay, he off course said no… My parents had a small general dealer in our town, and we met the most interesting characters and had very unique experiences. Many of my paintings has a frame made from wood and paper, collaged and painted with logo’s of products found in general dealers and spaza shops. I partook in school concerts, choirs and took viola lessons for a while, so music in all its forms inspires me. There is a black and white dog in most of my paintings. Though Rakker is no longer with us he was quite the character. Now I live on a game farm surrounded by nature, and soon the big 5 will be released. Who would not be inspired by this!

South Africa has so many cultures coming together, there will always be something inspiring…

All the characters in my art is happy and smiling in a make believe place that I escape to. I hope you are left with a smile on your face after looking at my art, and welcome to my world…
