About Mariana

I was born in Cape Town in 1956. I moved to Johannesburg in 1975. After my first husband was killed in a car accident I returned to Cape Town in 1991 where I got married again. After my second husband was killed in November 2000, I started doing sculptures in clay as therapy. I was fortunate enough to have a very talented artist (Terence Evans) as a boarder and he encouraged me to try my hand at oil painting. He played a very big role in my painting career and is a great inspiration to me. I am a creator at heart and love art and I love to paint and to sculpt and have made a number of works with clay as well. I am a self-taught artist and love to experiment with new ideas and colors, gaining inspiration from the world around me. This makes my work purely talent-based and my style is derived from my own personal thoughts and feelings as I paint and the connection I have to each individual piece of work.
I am inspired by the beauty of the female form, the curves and softness of the skin. The expression on the faces of people going by fascinates me. Some of my paintings is inspired by Van Gogh, Rossetti, Goya , da Vinci, Raffaello , Klimt and Dali to name a few.
