About "Stem De Cheri: Die Gil"
'Die Gil' is a contemporary re-interpretation of 'Pop Art' (a style prevalent in the 60's and 70's, typified by the works of artists like Andy Warhol). This era of Pop Art explored and was concerned with ideas of mass production, industry and the flat, plastic quality of products created in the age of mechanism and 'mass-production'.
With the advent of the digital or information age in which we now live, it seems that the times of flat, inpersonal consumerism have passed and we have emerged into a period where customisation, personalisation, individual expression and, yep, 'blinging-out' one's style has become possible and more or less the norm for many.
'Die Gil' takes as its visual reference the cover of Lady Gaga's Fame Monster album. It plays with the common idea of referencing and/or borrowing from influencial and iconic pop-culture figures - in this case one who herself borrows and adapts ideas constantly from other sources to play with in creating a public persona. However in great contrast to 'Pop Art' of previous eras where depersonalisation and 'flattening' of the subject matter was typical, this work reflects the more playful, individualistic times in which we now live.
The title of the work is a play on Gaga's own use of an alter-ego. I though it would be fun to create an altogether new persona for her who exists totally in the painted realm of my imagination. Her name is Stem de Cheri. Which is at once a play on the fact that all the flowers and branches in the work are references of cherry trees and blossoms. But it also plays on the 'stem' as being the Afrikaans word for voice, and 'cheri' refering to the French term for sweetheart - or the ZA expression 'cherrie/cheri', referring to a dude's bokkie, fluff, chick... So: Voice of my sweetheart/voice of my bokkie. Ironically in the work Stem covers her mouth, emits no sound, no song or gil. The noise in the work seems to surround her in the abstracted, chaotic cage of cherry branches that entrap her.
