About Ron
RON WALDECK -- A LIFE DEDICATED TO ART
Ron Waldeck's artistic journey is rooted in a lifelong passion for painting and a deep appreciation of wildlife, people and the natural world. Born in 1946 in the then Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, Ron developed an interest in art at an early age. A self-taught artist, he has explored different materials, techniques and subjects throughout his career, building a varied body of work and earning recognition in South Africa and internationally.
His early artistic work involved engraving images onto brass sheets, a process requiring patience, precision and careful attention to detail. He later moved to watercolour and gouache, concentrating particularly on birds and wildlife. These subjects allowed him to express his love of animals while developing the detailed observation that has remained a feature of his art.
Over the years, Ron expanded both his subject matter and his approach to painting. His work encompasses realism, impressionistic treatments and palette-knife painting in an impasto style, where layers of paint create texture and depth. This versatility allows him to move between finely detailed studies and more expressive, textured compositions.
A particular preference for close-up subjects runs through his work. Whether painting the face of a San person, the intricate form of a flower, an African animal, the human figure or children playing on a beach, Ron brings the viewer close to the subject. His paintings invite attention to expression, character and the details that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

EXHIBITIONS AND GALLERY EXPERIENCE
Ron has exhibited in numerous South African galleries and has also owned and managed galleries in several towns and cities. His career has therefore included both creating his own work and presenting art to the public through gallery ownership and management.
A notable achievement was his selection by the Watercolour Society of South Africa as one of the top five artists to exhibit at Norscot Manor in Johannesburg.
His international exhibition experience includes an exhibition in South West Africa, now Namibia, and two exhibitions in Frankfurt, Germany, at the Ambient fair. These opportunities brought his work to audiences beyond South Africa.
INTERNATIONAL AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Ron's paintings have received repeated recognition in the American Art Awards, with achievements across floral realism, portraiture and animal realism. These awards reflect the breadth of his subjects and his ability to capture the distinctive qualities of each.
His recorded achievements include:
• 2014 -- Fourth place in Floral Realism for "Jasmine" (648).
• 2016 -- Fourth place in Floral Realism for "Iris" (708).
• 2017 -- Third place in Floral Realism for "Inca Lily" (769A).
• 2020 -- Sixth place in Floral Realism for "Sunflower" (818).
• 2021 -- First place in the category "Portrait of Someone Not Famous" for "Khoisan Woman" (852).
• 2022 -- Sixth place in the category "Portrait of Someone Not Famous" for "Winter Woolies" (884).
In 2023, Ron achieved recognition for four paintings across three categories:
• Fourth place in Floral Realism for "Rosebud and Droplets" (917).
• Fifth place in "Portrait of Someone Not Famous" for "Contemplation" (869), a black-and-white study of a male face.
• Second place in Realism Animal for "The Challenge" (918), depicting an elephant.
• Third place in Realism Animal for "Cheek to Cheek" (928), depicting leopards.
The competition information accompanying these achievements records participation by artists from 56 countries, with judging undertaken by 25 leading American galleries.
PUBLICATIONS AND PRINT SERIES
Ron's work has also received exposure through print publications. He was featured in a four-page spread in the international magazine African Sporting Gazette, as well as in Arabella Life, the official magazine of the Arabella Country Estate in South Africa.
In addition to his original artworks, Ron developed and established a print series marketed through selected outlets in South Africa. This extended the reach of his work and provided another way for people to enjoy his art.
