About "New Shoes"
This is a commissioned work. The buyer asked me to paint her a ballerina and instead of doing the traditional dancing ballerina I decided to capture the moment of a little girl getting her very first pair of ballerina shoes and trying them on. As she has the aspiratiions of being a great dancer, by showing a doll and teddy bear in the painting, it shows her discarding her little girl treasures of a teddy bear and doll, to be a great ballerina
I matriculated in 1980 and then studied Graphic Design at Wits Technicon, where I helped to finance my studies by selling my paintings. After completing my national service I started my long career in advertising. After many years of working for well known agencies, such as Ogilvy Mather Rightford Serltrip and Makin, Lindsay Smithers FCB, J Walter Thompson (JWT)and winning many local and international awards, I joined Evans Hunt Scott. Taking on the challenges of a smaller agency run by myself and Curtis we later bought EHS and changed the name to Guru Advertising. Still running Guru we are a successfully and creative agency which rates in the top 5 creative agencies in SA by "Objectivity". After years of advertising I have decided to re-enter the world of art and do what I love best - painting.
