Mandlenkosi Khuzwayo

ARTIST STATEMENT
I was born at Durban City (South Africa). I moved to Eshowe (small rural town) situated at north of KwaZulu Natal where I settled with my grandparents at the age of six years. Mom was staying at Durban and she was still alive when my father passed away when I was eight. My grandparents had a lot of contribution in my life. They have taught me so many things in life. My grandmother was a craft person and she was making Zulu mats, pots, brooms and clay stuff and selling it to the people. It was useful because she was able to put food on the table. Mostly I liked clay stuff but just for fun such as making clay toys. I was young at that moment and I was just doing it to play (toys) while I was away from home to look after my grandfather[0x1]s cattle during after school hours. I remember my grandmother used to tell me that [0x1]God gave you hands to do whatever you want to do[0x1]. When I was at high school (grade 9) I started to do some sketch drawings and to play with paint. My class teacher encouraged me a lot as he said I was talented and that I must carry on with it.
The medium I use is craft acrylic paint on board or on canvas and pencil, gouache paint and charcoal on paper. My work is based on the things affecting us as people living in these days. There are things which are not easy to notice, some of us there are so many things wrong we did in our lives. We are still doing things which we are not proud about and that makes us sometimes lose our direction and end up stuck in a corner which is not easy to come out from and we regret this for the rest of our lives. Most people they ignore their back ground, where they come from, especially us as the youth.
Thank you
