About "The Singing Ferryman"

Kevin is the ferryman at Umngazi River Bungalows on the Wild Coast. He takes guests on the daily sunset cruise, where he imitates the call of the fish eagles with such accuracy, that they come down to feed on fish that he throws to them, so guests can see, and photograph, these magnificent birds up close. Then on the return trip he hands out his song sheets, and all aboard sing along with him to his traditional Xhosa songs. After taking this photo of him singing, It inspired me to do this painting, that I believe captures a memorable moment in all the lives of those on the cruise, and also of this colourful, humorous character.

About Tony

Tony Reid

I was born in Durban, and have spent my entire life in what I still believe is one of best places on the South African coast.I have always been interested in art since my schooldays, and attended extra art lessons while at school. I am self taught, and have dabbled in painting over the years, but only started painting seriously a few years ago. I am a recently retired bank employee, and now run my own property valuation company, and do painting in my spare time.I enjoy photography and my paintings of wildlife, landscapes, and the many diverse people of our country, are all from photographs that I have taken, or those sent to me by friends.
