About Benjamin
BENJAMIN MITCHLEY
I was born 1967 /01 /01, in the Free State, South Africa.
I studied fine arts at the Vaal Triangle Technikon in Van der Bijl Park in 1985, and Pretoria Technikon in 1987.
The human Spirit is important in my work because it is part of me. In my latest works I depict scenes of everyday life as in the paintings of the Impressionists. The contours that form the shapes on my canvas, in these works, comes together when viewed from a distance, to create a more realistic view of the subject painted.
My older works vary in style and technique. I am a versatile artist when it concerns commissioned work, in respect of painting on canvas, mural work, as well as sculpture and scenic painting and faux techniques.
In October 2004, I worked on the IBN BATTUTA SHOPPING MALL in Dubai, the biggest themed shopping mall in the world. I will always cherish the friendly, kind and hospitable nature of the people I met during my stay in Dubai.
I traveled to Zurich, Switzerland, in April 2005. People going to, and coming from work in Zurich main station, as well as people coming out to celebrate the sun light after a cold and cloudy day, had a major impact on me. I started looking at my fellow humans more closely, and in turn at myself, recognizing more good than bad. This brought about the change in the style of my work.
In December 2005, I traveled to Munich Germany. Ancient and classic artworks have influenced me from a young age and seeing them up close gave me a deeper sense of appreciation.
I returned to Dubai in 2006 to work on exhibits in IBN BATTUTA shopping mall.
Dec 2006 I worked with a scenic company, ITS, on Monte Casino's East end Teatro project, Johannesburg.
May 2007 I worked for Gulf Creative, on a sculpture project for the Dubai Municipality.
July 2008 I had a Solo exhibition,'Spirit', in the Artb gallery in Capetown, and in March 2009 took part in a group exhibition, 'My Country, My Land' in The Hyde Park Gallery, Johannesburg. July 2009 I was part of an exhibition at Hyde Park, 'Green,Organic,Nature,Nurture' of which the proceeds went to 'Food and Trees for Africa'
I returned from a trip to Italy and Portugal in September 2009. The vibrant atmospheric light is influencing me more. The people are still of great interest to me, and the Art and Architectural History amazing to admire.
