About Johannes

Johannes Scott

Au79: 1899-1902 is deconstruction in practice. The text, a body of paintings in the form of a polyptych, aims to differentiate concepts concerning the Anglo-Boer War.
Historically Afrikaner discourse has placed closure on Boer consciousness that has generally been cantered on the idea of an authentic and essential Boer identity. This has been evident in both visual and literary cultural production and specifically in the practice of historicism.
Au79 attempts to de-center the voice of the Boer, British and Black war-subject. Non-events and underlying material conditions are made visible. The text transcends the concept of a metaphysical Boer personality; it negates hierarchy; it helps to see the historical war subject as a social construction.
This art project attempts to stimulate more inclusive associations that may add to the context of the South African War of 1899 – 1902.
