Recognising Fine Art

The term 'fine art' does not necessarily mean art of a very high quality, it is used to describe certain forms of art that adhere to traditional practices and standards.

Fine art includes drawing, painting and sculpture but newer forms of art such as mime and dance are not generally included.

Many wealthy people over the years have taken an interest in collecting fine art. Due to the extortionate prices associated with highly sought after pieces of fine art this is partly due to a show of status and power.

There is more to it than that though, at least for some. Having a wide collection of fine art allows you to see how artists from different countries and periods of time viewed the world around them. It is like a history of humanity from many different and personal points of view.

Most fine art collectors specialise in one or two areas that are of particular interest, this is generally because there are so many types of art it is hard to be an expert in all of them. Some areas in which fine art collectors tend to concentrate include African art, fine art photography, fine art prints and folk art.

If you are interested in starting your own collection of fine art here are some pieces of advice to help you get started:

Only buy art that you really like, that way even if a piece loses value you can still appreciate it.
Join the mailing lists for any local art galleries and attend events as often as possible.
Browse art online. If you do not have time for a trip to a gallery then studying art on your computer screen is the next best thing.
Start reading art magazines and publications.
Seek out some local artists. See if you can arrange to view their work, if possible discuss the work directly with the artist.
Look for art collecting clubs or groups. These can be a very useful source of information.
