About Michelle
Michelle is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.
I paint under my Italian grand father’s name Basso. Born in Zimbabwe, I moved to South Africa at the age of eight. From as early as I can remember, I spent many hours drawing, with my main interest lying in figurative work.
For some twenty years, I worked in the advertising, show business and film industries. Running laser light shows for the entertainment world led to an early fascination with light and movement, both of which I incorporate into my artwork today. Working as a film producer and director later on in my career helped to hone my eye for composition, colour and balance and deepened my love and understanding of Africa’s natural beauty and culture.
My paintings are created in oils and I often work on highly textured surfaces.
I accept commissions for personal and animal portraits. However, I prefer to produce “slice of life” candid works, a fleeting moment in time, rather than traditional style posed portraiture.
A few years ago my fascination with light and movement led me to branch out and add abstract work to my portfolio. This work incorporates free flowing metal, gemstones, glass and other inspirational forms from nature. Each piece is very organic and unplanned, coming from within and developing an energy of its own as I work on it.
I also sculpt in clay and reproduce my sculptures in bronze and Cemcrete
