Breaking every law of composition in every "How to Paint" manual, Spies places his trees (for this is one of a series) slap bang in the middle of the work, yet the result is far from boring (as the manuals will warn), but rather makes the tree the hero as your eye wanders up its strong trunk and into the colourful leaves and branches. In Tree of Knowledge, there are abstract shapes at the base of the tree, which whilst not appearing to resemble anything to do with the symbology of the Kabalah do hint at some sort of inner working or formulated great scheme.
