About Corne

Corne Eksteen

Corne was born at Zastron, South Africa on October 6, 1973. He studied for a BA in Fine Art at the University of Pretoria and UNISA (University of South Africa)
He spent several years working in related fields from Menswear Designer to various positions in the Interior Decorating and Design Industry before starting his own business in 1998. As a Visual Artist Corne has been actively working and exhibiting since 1996. Taking part in numerous group and two person exhibitions on an International level. He has reached the finals of several prestigious art competitions including the ABSA Atelier Competition. His work is currently included in several private collections across the world as far afield as Germany, Sweden and the USA.

Corne Eksteen is first and foremost a visual artist. His work has gone through many phases and periods over the last 20 years that he has been active as an artist. The common thread running through his work can best be described as a study of the human condition relating to the interplay between gender, sexuality and spirituality in the late 20th and the early 21st century. Sometimes drenched with obscure references to popular culture from PJ Harvey lyrics to David Lynch films, his work also references older cultures and religions like Paganism and Gnosticism.

Corne's work has often stirred emotions. His two person show "Spiritulized" in late 1998 caused an outrage at several exhibition locations with protesters blocking the entrances to venues, thus his work has often been labeled Shock Art. The work often presents itself as homo-erotic work, but on closer study one finds a strong conceptual undertone to the work. He has been known to use actual skin tissue from his own body in paintings and often refers to the process of observing the work as an conceptual work in its own right.
