Modern art is the name used for art work which was produced from the 19th century to the 1970's. Modern artists moved away from the traditional concepts of art to produce different, often more personal paintings and sculptures.

Phases Of Modern Art

The first main phase or movement associated with modern art is impressionism. Well known impressionist artists include Renoir, Monet and Rodin. Impressionist painters used a wider range of colours than their traditional predecessors and adopted a freer and less rigid approach to art in general.

Post-impressionism is the term used to describe the paintings of some French artists working towards the end of the 1800's. This style of painting involved using many small dots of unmixed colour on the canvas which would be converted into a complete image by the human eye when viewed from a short distance. It is also referred to as pointillism. Gaugin, Picasso and Matisse were all post-impressionist artists.

Another phase of modern art which had a strong influence on artists in both Europe and America is Cubism. It was developed by Parisian artists who painted still life images using shapes to create their pictures. Around the same time Russian sculptors developed constructivism. This was a method of building sculptures using industrial materials such as glass and steel, they were often abstract and geometric art works.

After the end of World War II an art movement called abstract impressionism came out of the United States. This form was also known as movement painting, famous artists in this area include Pollock and Gorky.
