About Sukie
Born: Zimbabwe, Southern Africa.
Published: Two books of poetry, several freelance humour & travel articles.
Married: Graham Jahme, Wild Life Artist – Worldwide Nature Artist’s Group.
Children: Two daughters, Kerry & Taryn.
Sukie works on freelance art commissions and is comfortable undertaking a variety of subjects ranging from graphic, contemporary and abstract art, through to photography, book illustration, calligraphy, textile design, screen printing, murals, lead glass, pottery, sculpture, wood carving and fabric art such as appliqué, embroidery and hand weaving.
Her artworks and graphics hang in private collections in Africa, U.S.A., United Kingdom, Europe and Malaysia.
Her present series of photographs on exhibition are on the subject of l’Agulhas, Cape of Storms. Her subject matter is the ocean debris found washed up on the beaches which she calls “Nature Art”, and local historical buildings such as the light house, harbour, fishermen’s cottages and Anglican Church.
Since leaving their farming concern in Zimbabwe, August 2000 due to the political situation in that country and returning to live in the beautiful Cape of South Africa, Sukie put her art career on hold for a period of three years in order to concentrate on promoting and marketing her husband, Graham Jahme, - helping to establish him internationally as a fine artist painting from their home studio at the southern most tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas.
Although Sukie has produced work under the signature of Susan Jahme in the past, she has recently made the decision to use the childhood pet-name she was given in order to keep a separate identity to that of Graham’s work, as she feels that many related artists working under the same surname are often grouped and compared.
Sukie’s proudest achievements in art are when she and Graham had a joint exhibition in:
June 1990: hosted by the Wild Life Society of Zimbabwe at the Harare Sheraton. Eighty of their artworks were sold on the opening night and all the proceeds from the sales of their work from the exhibition were donated to the Cecil Kop Nature Reserve in Manicaland, Zimbabwe to purchase breeding stock for the game park. A wild life conservation educational school was also built for the local children where they were taught nature conservation and anti-poaching.
October 1992: Four of her original paintings of raptors were donated and sold on auction. Limited edition signed prints, (1000) of the originals were also sold and all proceeds went to the Wild Life Society of Zimbabwe for the “Save the Rhino Fund.”
October 1995: Six original paintings were donated to the “Tikki Hywood Trust” and sold on auction at a fund-raising dinner. The proceeds went towards creating a new gene-pool with introduction of breeding animals from Malawi and Zambia.
She is also an established author and poet, recognised in U.S.A., Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Her work is published under the name of Susan Cook-Jahme and extracts of her latest anthology of poetry “African Dust on the Soles of My Feet” From her earliest memories she has always loved painting and creating. Art and craft have been and are her passion. She remembers her teacher’s would despair at school when she would skip maths lessons in order to spend extra time in the art room or library. (Due to this truancy she admits her ability with mathematical equations somewhat limited, and says she is a firm believer of the pocket calculator!)
